Netherlands ZZP Tax Calculator 2026
A Dutch ZZP'er pays box 1 income tax at 35.75% up to €38,883, 37.56% to €78,426 and 49.50% above it, on profit already reduced by the €1,200 zelfstandigenaftrek and the 12.7% mkb-winstvrijstelling — then a separate Zvw healthcare contribution of 4.85% on taxable profit up to €79,409. Both reliefs give tax back at no more than 37.56% however high your income, and the two tax credits are measured on two different figures.

The order of operations is the whole calculation
Dutch freelance tax is not a rate applied to profit. It is a chain, and each link changes what the next one sees:
- Revenue minus business expenses gives winst, the profit.
- The ondernemersaftrek comes off — €1,200 of zelfstandigenaftrek, plus €2,123 of startersaftrek for a starter. Both require the hours criterion.
- The mkb-winstvrijstelling of 12.7% comes off what is left — note that it is a percentage of profit after step 2, not of the original profit.
- The box 1 scale applies to the remainder.
- Above €78,426 the tariefsaanpassing adds tax back, because steps 2 and 3 are only allowed to relieve at 37.56%.
- The heffingskortingen come off the tax, not the income.
- The Zvw contribution is charged separately on the taxable profit.
Reverse steps 2 and 3 and you get a different answer, which is why a lot of quick estimates of Dutch freelance tax disagree with each other.
The two credits are measured on different profits
This is the detail most worth knowing, and the one most likely to be wrong in a spreadsheet you built yourself.
The arbeidskorting — maximum €5,685, withdrawn at 6.51% from €45,592 and gone by €132,920 — is calculated on arbeidsinkomen. The Belastingdienst defines that for an entrepreneur as winst uit onderneming vóór ondernemersaftrek en mkb-winstvrijstelling: profit before the reliefs.
The algemene heffingskorting — maximum €3,115, withdrawn at 6.398% from €29,736 and nil from €78,427 — is calculated on verzamelinkomen, which is income after them.
Using the post-relief figure for both is the natural mistake, and it does not fail safely: it inflates the arbeidskorting and so understates the tax, because across most of the range in between the credit is shrinking as income rises.
Where the marginal rate peaks — and it is not at the top
The headline top rate is 49.50%. It is not the highest rate a Dutch freelancer faces on an extra euro of profit.
Three things withdraw at once as profit rises past €78,426: the arbeidskorting is still tapering at 6.51%, the algemene heffingskorting has only just finished, and the tariefsaanpassing starts clawing back the reliefs at 11.94%. Stack those on the scale rate and the effective marginal rate on profit runs above 60% through that band, then falls back once the arbeidskorting reaches zero at €132,920.
Move the revenue field above and below €78,426 to see it. The pattern — a hump in the middle rather than a peak at the top — is the same shape we found in Spanish regional scales, where the region with the highest headline rate is mid-table for a normal freelance income.
The 1,225-hour rule is worth less than its reputation
The urencriterium is the best-known threshold in Dutch freelance tax: spend at least 1,225 hours a year on the business and you qualify for the ondernemersaftrek. The Belastingdienst also requires that you spend more time on the business than on other work, a condition waived if you were not an entrepreneur in one of the five preceding years.
What it is actually worth now is modest. The deduction it gates is €1,200, relieved at 37.56%, and missing the criterion leaves the mkb-winstvrijstelling untouched. On a mid-range profit the difference is a few hundred euros a year — real, but no longer the cliff edge that older guidance describes. For a starter it matters more, because €2,123 of startersaftrek rides on the same test.
What this does not model
A resident ZZP'er below AOW age, box 1 only. Not included: box 3 wealth tax, partner allocation, mortgage interest relief, the expatriate ruling, the meewerkaftrek and stakingsaftrek, investment allowances, the FOR successor arrangements, or your own health insurance premium — which sits on top of the Zvw contribution rather than replacing it.
BTW is a separate system and is not part of the figures above. The €20,000 kleineondernemersregeling threshold, which must hold for both the year you register and the year before, is covered alongside every other country's in our VAT and GST registration thresholds guide.
For what the same income keeps elsewhere, the five-country net income comparison runs the tax side, and because the Netherlands sits well above the EU average on prices, the cost of living adjusted salary converter is the other half of any comparison with a cheaper country.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the zelfstandigenaftrek only €1,200?
Because that is the amount the Belastingdienst publishes for 2026: €1,200 for entrepreneurs who meet the hours criterion and are below AOW age at the start of the year, halved to €600 for those at or above it. Its cash value is limited further, because the relief is calculated at 37.56% rather than at your marginal rate. We do not publish figures for earlier years here: the 2026 page states none, and we have not verified the phase-down schedule from primary sources.
What happens if I miss the 1,225-hour urencriterium?
You lose the ondernemersaftrek — both the zelfstandigenaftrek and, if you are a starter, the startersaftrek. You keep the mkb-winstvrijstelling, which is not conditional on hours. Switch the hours question above to "No" to see the difference on your own figure; at €45,000 of profit it is a few hundred euros, which is far less than the rule's reputation suggests, because the deduction it gates has shrunk to €1,200.
Why do the two tax credits use different income figures?
Because the law says so, and it is the single easiest thing to get wrong in a Dutch calculation. The arbeidskorting is computed on arbeidsinkomen, which the Belastingdienst defines as "winst uit onderneming vóór ondernemersaftrek en mkb-winstvrijstelling" — profit before the entrepreneur reliefs. The algemene heffingskorting is computed on verzamelinkomen, which is income after them. Using the post-relief figure for both inflates the arbeidskorting, because the credit is being withdrawn across most of this income range.
Is the Zvw contribution the same as my health insurance premium?
No, and this catches people. The Zvw income-dependent contribution of 4.85% on taxable profit, capped at €79,409 of contribution income, is a separate charge that the Belastingdienst assesses after you file. Your monthly premium to a health insurer is on top of it and is not modeled here. Employees have a higher rate paid by their employer instead; a ZZP'er pays the lower rate personally.
Does this cover BTW or the 30% ruling?
No. This models box 1 income tax and the Zvw contribution only. BTW is a separate system — note that below €20,000 of turnover you may use the kleineondernemersregeling and charge no BTW at all, in which case you also cannot reclaim it. The expatriate ruling, box 3 wealth tax, partner allocation and mortgage interest relief are all outside scope.
